Why Summer Reading?
Learning happens all year long. Not just during the school year. However, children who do not read over the summer are at a greater risk of experiencing the 'summer slide': the tendency to lose reading skills during the summer months when school is out. Low income kids are at a greater risk of losing these skills than their higher income counterparts, and by 5th grade, this loss of learning can amount to as much as 3 years.
Regardless of your income level, here are some tips to help make kids fall in love with reading.
- * If kids see you reading, they are more likely to want to read.
- * Kids who pick out their own books are more likely to finish them.
- * Keep kid friendly magazines and books in the back seat of your car for kids to look at while you are riding around.
- * Encourage kids to read instructions, the items from a grocery list, or a restaurant menu.
- * Never bully or make fun of your kids about their reading.
- * Set aside quiet time every day for reading.
- * Experts overwhelmingly agree that paper books are better for young readers than e-books when it comes to reading comprehension and reading satisfaction.
